try heating it for twice as long, at half power. also maybe ask your doctor about antidepressants
#could also just let it sit for a few minutes before you eat it#to bring the temperatures to equilibrium#but i prefer to change the cook time and power#so that way i don't have to deal with the couple minutes of. waiting. and doing nothing#bc i'm worried i'll wander off and forget i was about to eat#anyway; entropy actually helps in this case#what with the whole. “thermal energy moving to surrounding colder spots” thing.#hope you; uh. feel better. though

“You Know That I'm Obsessed With Your Body ♡˖” BSD Men x GN!Reader ੈ✩‧₊˚
╰┈➤ Chuuya Nakahara, Osamu Dazai, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Nikolai Gogol, Sigma, H.P. Lovecraft
Warnings; Suggestive, kisses, hickeys, bite marks, allusions to self harm (Dazai), sh scars (Dazai), prolly a little ooc
Description; BSD men and their physical attributes
A/n; CAS lyric title!!! But I cannot bring myself to write reqs RN so............but guys i actually talked to a guy OMG never thought I'd have big enough balls but I got his ig ^w^
⑅Chuuya Nakahara⑅
Chuuyas arms are beautiful to you, they're not insanely buff and they're not thin, but at a perfect equilibrium. They're decorated with intricate tattoos and beautiful colors, and sometimes small dotted lines left by your teeth or maroon spots formed by your love and passion for each other. You loved feeling them wrap around your torso or waist with him leaning his head against your back, letting all the thoughts in his mind flow from his mouth like a waterfall. Other times, he'd hang his arms over your shoulders, letting you feel his biceps against the nape of your neck, ghosting over the baby hairs on your skin. His arms can carry you too, no matter your weight. If it'd make you feel better, he'd use his ability to help and reassure you that he won't drop you or let you get hurt.
“There we go, darlin', see, I told you I wouldn't let you get hurt. Literally not even the strongest gust of wind could knock me over with you right now, so quit worrying.”
⑅Osamu Dazai⑅
Dazai has such a gorgeous torso, bandaged or not. His skin is soft on contrast to the rough and volatile life he's always lead. The only patches of skin that aren't smooth are the ones that are littered with past scars, whether self inflicted or from other people. When Dazai trusts you enough, he'll ask you to help him take off his bandages before bed, letting your fingers brush over the rigid bumps and sharply inhaling while adjusting to your sweet touch in a new, naked place. He lets you kiss the scars and it helps him feel a little relaxed receiving your acceptance through soft kisses and affection instead of being pitied or shamed for his past. It's not like you encourage it, but you don't waste your breath on lecturing him on why he shouldn't have. It's in the past, so instead you'll offer your support for him now rather than dwelling on what you can't change.
“Mmnn...your lips are so soft on my back, baby...keep going, sweetheart, you know how much I love feeling your kisses on my skin...”
⑅Nikolai Gogol⑅
Nikolais thighs could resurrect a dead man, and you couldn't help but feel the same way every time you had your head between or against them. Occasionally your hands would hold them apart and squeeze or grope at them, feeling the firmness beneath the palm of your hand. The pressure from your fingertips leaves temporary pale spots with every pinch and your teeth and tongue leave red ones in your wake as you kiss, suck, and bite all over his thigh, and he loves it. Nikolai loves the harsh feeling of your teeth clamping around his skin, making him gasp and giggle in excitement with a hand on your neck encouraging you to continue. He's got a higher pain tolerance, so if you like to give lovebites, especially on thighs, he's your guy.
“Ah-! Oh, don't worry dove, it doesn't hurt. You know I have a good pain tolerance! You can keep going, hehe, I don't mind it.”
⑅Fyodor Dostoevsky⑅
Fyodors hands are thin and pale aside from some select spots with higher blood concentration. His nails are bitten down to the quick almost always and his fingers are bony and thin. They rest gently on your hips when you sit on his lap while he types or just relaxes with you, his thumbs rubbing circles into the fabric of either your top or bottoms. Sometimes they'll travel upwards, resting against your midsection and making you shiver from their low temperature. He'd laugh under his breath at your reaction and slide them further up, loving the idea that he has you squirming in his grasp. Otherwise, he'd keep a hand on your thigh, rubbing it out of habit modestly. In public he keeps his hands to himself, but in private his hands have a mind of their own.
“Are they that cold, Moya Lyubov? You'll get used to it eventually, unless you'd like to find your own way to warm my hands up?”
⑅Sigma⑅
Sigmas jawline is so defined and Everytime you look at it, an overwhelming urge to kiss along it bubbles up inside of you. Sigma doesn't dislike it, but he'll act like he does, always squirming and playfully grimacing. Eventually he'll give in though, holding your hand while you pepper soft pecks along his skin. He'll return them all over your cheeks and nose, tickling your skin and making you giggle. You can't help but watch Sigmas fingers trace over his jawline while he's deep in thought about this that and the other, admiring how perfect it looks on him.
“H-hey, knock it off, I'm in the middle of fillin' out papers! I said quit it- huff...fine, just a few though! You're really distracting, you know that?”
Bonus; ⑅ H.P. Lovecraft⑅
His hair is so long and luscious- how could you not want to run your fingers through it while your sleepy boyfriend lays his head in your lap? The upper half is smooth and straight while it changes into silky curls towards the bottom, though they're not the tightest and allow for your fingers to brush through them with minimal effort. He loves the feeling of your hands against his scalp, giving soft hums and groans of a relaxed pleasure. His face has his usual neutrality regardless of how nice it feels to get his head massaged by his lover. He frequently lets you pull it into a ponytail or put it into braids or whatever style you please. He lets you brush it, too, as long as you start at the bottom instead of ripping the brush through his hair.
“Mnn...that feels nice, dear...don't mind if I fall asleep on top of you, I can't help it.”
A/n; I feel so bad for not getting to requests, something like this was the easiest thing to do this week though because I had mock trial comp right after school so i couldn't write anything from 8am-7;30 pm some nights and it was the end of the quarter so i had to focus more on school work.

The Laws Of Thermodynamics
𓆝 𓆟 𓆞
The first law of thermodynamics states:
To be loved is to be changed-
‘The law of conservation of energy:
It cannot be created or destroyed.’
To lose or gain:
…work,
…heat,
…or matter:
Internal energy of the system must alter.
The second law of thermodynamics states:
To call upon archangel Azrael-
‘For any spontaneous process,
The entropy of the universe increases.’
To bring:
…death,
…decay,
…or chaos:
Defined as ‘change within [a closed system].’
The third law of thermodynamics states:
Death is the ultimate equilibrium-
‘As temperature tends to absolute zero,
Entropy tends to a constant value’
To be:
…warm
…alive
…and breathing:
Is to become something else entirely.

everybody talks about aquifers like theyre normal. but aquifers are weird. the ground is full of water. and apparently weve known about this shit since like forever.
Artesian aquifer scheme:
Aquifer
Impervious strata
Infiltration area
Artesian well
Saturation level
Subartesian well
Artesian spring
An artesian well is a well that brings groundwater to the surface without pumping because it is under pressure within a body of rock and/or sediment known as an aquifer.[1] When trapped water in an aquifer is surrounded by layers of impermeable rock or clay, which apply positive pressure to the water, it is known as an artesian aquifer.[1] If a well were to be sunk into an artesian aquifer, water in the well-pipe would rise to a height corresponding to the point where hydrostatic equilibrium is reached.[1]
The first mechanically accurate explanation for artesian wells was given by Al-Biruni.
1000 years of knowing about the rocks...
The Great Artesian Basin (GAB)[1] of Australia is the largest and deepest artesian basin in the world, extending over 1,700,000 square kilometres (660,000 sq mi). Measured water temperatures range from 30 to 100 °C (86 to 212 °F). The basin provides the only source of fresh water through much of inland Australia.[2]
Most recharge water enters the rock formations from relatively high ground near the eastern edge of the basin (in Queensland and New South Wales) and very gradually flows toward the south and west.[6] A much smaller amount enters along the western margin in arid central Australia, flowing to the south and east through the permeable sandstone, at a rate of one to five metres per year.
Discharge water eventually exits through a number of springs and seeps, mostly in the southern part of the basin. The age of the groundwater, determined by carbon-14 and chlorine-36 measurements combined with hydraulic modelling, ranges from several thousand years for the recharge areas in the north to nearly 2 million years in the south-western discharge zones.[7]
the earth provides....
also, ive mentioned qanats on here before but there are nearly 3000 year old underground aqueducts in iran. i mean. i guess its not that crazy like you just dig a tunnel and mining is super old. but still

kinktober day 7: temperature play
prompt list
word count: ~520
pairing: astarion/karlach
rating: explicit
Her engine may have been fixed, but her skin is still hotter than anyone Astarion's ever touched. Almost on the edge of too much, but he can't bring himself to stop. His hands roam up her back, down her sides, along her stomach. She's rough with scars in some places, and surprisingly soft in others. When she sighs through her nose, deepening the kiss between them, even her breath feels like a hot summer breeze.
She parts their lips briefly. It's dark, but he can hear the smile on Karlach's lips. "Warming up?"
"Hardly a surprise," Astarion sighs back. He wants to say something else, but he's too overcome by her warmth, her weight-- Gods, her scent. "I need to be inside you," he blurts out.
Karlach sighs excitedly. "Oh fuck yes. Please."
She drags Astarion back into a kiss. She untucks his shirt and oh, her hands sliding up his stomach…it's so much. Astarion shakes, moaning against her lips.
He's not usually this sensitive. The undead don't feel physical sensations - pain or pleasure - as strongly as the living do. But Karlach - her claws gently pressing into his belly, the heat of her palms leeching into his skin - he hasn't felt this much of anything in decades. He wants to drown in it.
The feeling of her hands sliding down into his waistband. The way her warm body contrasts with the cool night air as his cock springs free. Her sighs of delight when his own hands pull her trousers down, when his fingers part her folds.
Fuck. She's even hotter down there. He knows he's imagining it, but his fingers feel scalded. Her cunt is hot, wet, clenching around his middle finger. Her claws dig into his ass as she pants feverishly.
"Astarion…" Gods, his name has never sounded so heavenly. "Come on…I need you…don't make me beg, mate…"
If he had enough wit to spare, he'd tease her about calling him 'mate' during sex. But he's as desperate as she is, so all he can do is pull Karlach's hips down onto his cock. He doesn't slide home, though.
She gasps as his cockhead slips against her clit. Then she chuckles. "You're cold."
"No, you-- You're just…hot," he retorts, as much as he can when Karlach is rutting against him, trying to ride him. Then she finds the angle, and his cock catches her entrance, and she sinks down all at once.
"Fuck!" Astarion gasps.
Fuck, fuck, fuck. Too much feeling. She overloads his senses without even trying. No room for anything but the delicious, all-consuming heat burning through him.
Seconds pass with the two of them panting, shuddering, adjusting to each other. Dual sensations of being enveloped with heat and filled with cold. Equilibrium. Nonsense thoughts flickering through Astarion's mind as he tries to compose himself.
But just when he's coming to his senses, Karlach lifts her hips, and when she drops, Astarion loses himself in her.
Her moans resonate through the tent. Her hands join with his, holding him down. Her tail curls around his leg. Her body pins him to the floor, a comforting weight.
Her heat bleeds into him, and he can't get enough. He could almost feel alive again.

what makes the weight worth it; writing for a single feeling
Author’s Note: to every writer (and reader) out there; thank you for all that you are, for all that you do, and for how much light and life you bring to the not-so-simple act of existing. 💞 (if you've ever wondered what writers often go through emotionally—especially in today's culture of consumerism and "content"—then read this)
what makes the weight worth it; writing for a single feeling
Tomioka Giyuu x Reader
Word Count: ~900
CW: none
~faqs~
“You’re frowning again,” Giyuu murmurs, cool hands resting themselves on your hunched shoulders as he stands behind you.
“And?” you mutter, swivel chair creaking when you lean back into his touch, “It’s called a resting bitch face.”
Cracking a faint smile, he kneads at the tension in your muscles, “And your tea’s half finished,” pecking the top of your head while tacking on, “I’m quite familiar with your resting bitch face, and it’s distinct from your frowning face.”
“Shouldn’t you be more concerned if I ever do finish my tea?” you chuckle lightly, nose scrunching as you let out a long sigh, your desk feeling more and more foreboding as its clutter stretches out before you, “I’m just tired.”
“Tired of?” he prods gently, glancing at your browser to make sure he’s safe to reach over you and carefully close your laptop’s screen, “It’s only 11pm.”
“It’s stupid,” you mumble, feet cold as you spin yourself around, Giyuu’s lazy ponytail and concerned gaze a sight for sore eyes, “Let’s get in bed, m’kay?” waggling your eyebrows, “I forgot to wear socks.”
He grimaces at that, well acquainted with your gleeful usage of his thighs for warming your toes (and his poor stomach for warming your icicles fingers), but doesn’t protest, wordlessly slinging an arm around your waist. Your head flops onto his collarbone, pausing for a quiet moment of hazy dew and newly blossomed bluebells — familiar scents drifting from his freshly showered skin to your thoroughly worn, cotton sweatshirt.
—
Giyuu knows something’s up when you willingly brush your teeth, even allowing him to hand you a tiny cup of mouthwash, afterwards leading the way to bed, your tired face shining with night cream as you crawl under the blankets, promptly tucking the sheets beneath your chin while you fix a cute smile on him.
“Thanks for turning off the light,” you chime, giggling at his deadpan stare, quickly replaced by his silhouette, stark and limber as darkness and moonlight fills the room, decisive footsteps padding toward the bedframe.
You scoot over when he reaches the mattress, rolling into him as soon as he’s horizontal, eagerly cramming your toes into the crooks of his knees, grinning at his groan of resignation as he stiffens from the temperature difference.
“So,” Giyuu begins through gritted teeth, breathing shallowly (helplessly wishing you had better blood circulation), “What had you frowning?”
Your lips purse, exhaustion muddling your thoughts as you slowly process his question, fingertips like tiny pricks of ice as you tap them across his chest, goosebumps raising along his forearms even as he allows you to snuggle closer.
“I know I should be creative for the sake of being creative, for myself… but it’s hard when creativity also feels like something that exists for the sake of being shared. What is art in a vacuum? What’s the point of talking without anyone listening?”
He hums into your hair, finally relaxing as your limbs and his establish an equilibrium of warmth, catching your wrist and pressing a grounding kiss to your veins.
“It’s not that I feel uninspired, or that I don’t want to be creative, or that I’m burnt out from being creative… I’m just, wearing down from lack of use,” nose scrunching at your own analogy, “Not that I want to be used either,” rambling now, “But sometimes I feel like I’m offering samples of my heart at a grocery store, and everyone’s simply walking by. Nobody owes me a try, and hey, maybe you’re allergic to an ingredient, or ate lunch recently… I don’t know. I guess just, what’s the point in going to a restaurant if you only order a glass of water?”
A hollow silence passes as Giyuu waits to ensure you’re finished, his pulse steady and loud, throat constricting with a strange thickness. You exhale shakily, eyes glistening and bright as you peek up at him, the sharpness of his jaw made fuzzy by the weight of the night.
“I would hoard all of your samples,” he says roughly, voice scratchy with sleep, “Even if I was allergic to them, even if I was already stuffed.”
You snort, lungs expanding with emotion as you drawl, “You’re sooo romantic,” blinking confusedly when he places a delicate finger to your mouth, shushing you.
“Someone cares about your creativity, someone needs your creations,” he continues firmly, “Please keep creating them. I’m here, I can always be that someone, and I… I would like to help teach you that you can be that someone too. You can create for yourself, and listen to yourself, and cherish yourself. I know that isn’t really the problem, but… did I just make everything worse?”
Your expression contorts at Giyuu’s hesitation, endearment bursting in your ears as you make a fond, strangled noise, clinging somehow tighter to him, managing to squeeze a contented, surprised squeak from his drowsy body.
“I don’t think everything’s better,” you admit, “But thank you for loving me and my creative woes.”
“Of course,” he replies, cheeks noticeably pink despite the midnight hour, “And thank you for trusting me with your feelings.”
“No more, ‘kay?” you yawn into his armpit, “Dream time.”
“‘Kay,” Giyuu agrees, yawning in return, his whisper barely audible as unconsciousness looms on the edge of your blurring vision, “I hope I dream of you.”

Update
Hello guys, so not only did I relapse but I also got a fever and I am still recovering from it. Past few days have been chaotic. My uni told me on Sunday at 6pm that we have to give viva for the research papers we wrote in the month of may on monday and prepare our files as well by Monday afternoon and be present for viva 😭 fun fact I got fever on Sunday and the whole day I just tried my best to reduce my body temperature and by night mom came as well to help me out because the next day I had to be prepared to be present. And believe it or not my viva went well although I couldn’t bring all the complete documents I was able to answer well and then I immediately went home to rest and took today off as well that is Tuesday. And since tomorrow is a government holiday for us that means no uni they gave us a lot of deadlines due Thursday.
So although the temperature has subsided the runny nose and other symptoms still persist which is fine they aren’t worst to deal with.
Talking of my mental health I was pull free till Friday then on Saturday I pulled, Sunday was pull free again and this whole week I pulled. For all those wondering how am I managing now that I am not pull free, I use eye shadow to cover up the spots. If it works for me it may work for you as well, it’s not fool proof but it allows me to roam around without much anxiety.
Anyways, I cannot force myself into healing, I am falling apart in every manner but I cannot fall apart academically so tomorrow will be a big day of completing assignments, which means tonight I need my good night sleep.
Now that that’s been said let’s focus on other matters.
Now that I am completely not well inside or out I need to fall back into my comfort zone and do things that make me feel good.
So first and foremost that comes to mind is, limited socialising, I have been socialising a lot and it’s been draining my energy and it’s not just limited to uni so I’m taking a break from that.
To hit the bed at the same time everyday.
I am deleting any other social media that I use except tumblr so that my screen time eventually comes down.
1hr of physical activity so that would include a morning yoga session and an evening dance cardio both 30mins nothing too much.
Dietary restrictions, I have an autoimmune condition due to which I always have inflammation in my body which when gets worse scares me so no more coffee even if I crave it and drinking more fluids, green tea, electrolytes and chia seed drinks to ease digestion. And because my appetite is still low I will try to eat at least 2 meals a day.
Talking of meds, setting alarms and also segregating my medicines into weekly medicine boxes so that they become extremely convenient to take on time and also to carry.
Not forcing myself to study so much instead to produce my emotions on paper whether it’s by writing, journaling or even painting regularly and studying the minimum each day spread out through out the week.
Other self care activities to maintain my hygiene to be done regularly and to keep my surroundings clean and my laundry in check.
What I’m hoping to achieve by this is not much much but an equilibrium inside and outside mind and body.
Will update you guys regularly on what I was able to accomplish for the day.

Sailor's weather superstition
Of course superstition doesn't stop here either and to be clear it's only a thing with sailors but also with farmers and so on. But here are a few:
A ring around the sun or moon, means that rain will come real soon
If you see a halo around the moon on a clear night, it could be an indication of bad weather. This is not a spooky prediction, but quite banal science. Although it looks like a ghostly ring, it is really just the light of the moon refracted (or bent) by ice crystals. These ice crystals form the cirrus clouds - the tuft-like clouds we find high up in the sky. These cirrus clouds don't cause rain or storms, but here's the thing: they precede some low pressure areas by a day or two, and low pressure areas bring precipitation.
(x)
In other words: If you see these ice clouds refracting the light around the moon, it means that cirrus clouds are present, which could indicate a coming storm. also goes with the sun, but please don't look in there, it's not good for your eyes.
Mackerel sky, not 24 hours dry
A mackerel sky looks like a sky full of fish scales. These are cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds formed by atmospheric waves at high altitudes. As these high clouds gradually penetrate the sky and the air pressure begins to drop, precipitation associated with the disturbance can be expected in about 6 to 12 hours.
(x)
A thickening and lowering of cirrocumulus to altostratus or altocumulus in the middle tier is a good sign that the warm or low pressure front has moved closer and rain may begin to fall within less than six hours.
Clear moon, frost soon
Well, that's what they say about clear nights in winter, clear moon, frost soon. And we can be sure to expect a cool morning. This is not untrue, because if there are no clouds, the heat that has been collected during the day can escape from the earth's surface through the non-existent cloud cover and can therefore cause frost in autumn and winter.
Red at morning, Sailors warning; Red at night, Sailors delight
Since I have already made a separate post on this, please forgive me for only attaching the link. https://www.tumblr.com/ltwilliammowett/670757025738866688/red-at-morning-sailors-warning-red-at-night?source=share
Hair curls at high humidity
Human hair is extremely sensitive to changes in humidity. There are even hygrometers that use human hair as a measuring instrument. Your hair can absorb water from the air through hydrogen bonds. Since humid air contains more moisture, a strand of hair can form more hydrogen bonds and you suddenly look like Curly Sue - of course not, but your hair can frizz.
Feeling a storm in your bones
Oh, every old slat is there, and will certainly stand on deck all the time and tell you from their aching bones and joints that the weather is going to be bad. Well, some people are sensitive to the weather and rheumatics and people with arthritis often react more sensitively to temperature and weather fluctuations (I can tell you a thing or two about that). This is because their body fluids are in a constant equilibrium with the ambient air pressure. So when the barometer drops - like an approaching storm - your tissues can swell, irritating nerve endings and causing you additional pain. However, not everyone is like this and therefore rheumatics are not to be used as living barometers.
Thermometer cricket
No thermometer on board for once ? No problem, grab a cricket, preferably the ecanthus fultoni, aka the thermometer cricket.
(x)
Because as soon as the temperature rises, the animal chrips much faster, when it drops, it's the other way round. But not only that, you can even determine the temperature exactly. The chirp rate is counted in the time of 13 seconds and then the number 40 is added. This value corresponds almost exactly to the temperature in Fahrenheit.

Saturday was a lovely sunny day, so we fired up the BBQ.
These are bacon chops on the bone from Andarl Farm in Co Mayo. Each is the size of my hand from wrist to extended fingertips.
Accompanied by @dduane’s version of Zeughauskeller potato salad and a slug of BBQ sauce from Mic’s Chilli, they are delicious.
Potato salad recipe under the cut.
Potato Salad a la Zeughauskeller
Serves 4 as Side.
The Zeughauskeller (http://www.zeughauskeller.ch), located in the heart of Zurich, Switzerland, successfully straddles a very difficult divide between "tourist destination" and "locals' hangout". Once the cantonal armory, it now serves as a restaurant happily positioned just off one of the world's great shopping streets, the Bahnhofstrasse, and right by the busy Paradeplatz tram junction. Tourists probably know it best as the place with menus in nine languages -- a haven of big beer mugs and a wide spectrum of sausages, grills and Swiss specialties. Locals usually know it best as the kind of place where, when the furor of lunch dies down, you can sit and have a beer or a wine with a friend and gossip the afternoon away. But members of both groups may well know it for its potato salad.
Though this recipe does contain mayonnaise, it doesn't need as much as some, since the mayo gets thickening assistance from the potatoes' own starch, drawn out of them by a dousing with boiling stock. The restaurant goes through approximately twenty tons of this potato salad each year.
The Zeughauskeller's boss was kind enough to give us the recipe some years back...so here it is. This is an adaptation of the original, as most of us do not normally want to deal with twenty kilograms of potatoes at once.
3-3/4 lb Mealy potatoes
1 c beef stock
1 c chicken stock
1 small onion
1/2 oz fresh parsley
Salad dressing
1/2 c Mayonnaise, fresh if possible
1/4 c Brown or yellow mustard, as you prefer (more if desired)
(Because this preparation involves a prolonged session at room temperature while the stock and potatoes come into equilibrium, special attention must be given to making sure that the pots and pans involved are scrupulously clean. I normally freshly wash my pots and then scald them out with boiling water.)
Peel the potatoes and cut them into chunks -- quartering them seems to work well with smaller potatoes: if you have big ones, it probably makes more sense to chop them into eighths.
Cook in boiling salted water until "almost ready". (This is obviously very subjective: I go for the equivalent of "al dente".) Drain, trying to retain in the pan any starch that has come off the potatoes while boiling: but get rid of as much as possible of the water. Bring the stocks to boiling and pour them over the potatoes. Allow the potatoes to rest in the stock for 45 minutes.
Finely chop the parsley and onion: add them to the mixture and toss them together, letting them sit for five or ten minutes further to bring out the flavor. Then mix in the dressing.
Serve faintly warm.

Marine Life in Owari no Seraph
okay listen this is going to be a lot of rambling because im hype up on doing way too much college shit all day but i can't stop thinking about what the ecosystem within the oceans in OnS look like. because okay so in Chapter 43, Narumi brings up that the ocean is fucked up:
That the oceans are acidic AND poisonous with monsters "even worse than horsemen" inside
whcih yoichi follows with:
SO IT'S ACIDIC, POISONOUS, AND BLOOD RED WHICH IS SO . OKAY OKAY WE HAVE A LOT TO WORK WITH.
cause okay so something that is often talked about in ecology studies is the concept of resilience. which britannica kindly defines as "...the ability of an ecosystem to maintain its normal patterns of nutrient cycling and biomass production after being subjected to damage caused by an ecological disturbance." - BASICALLY entire ecosystems have varying levels of this shit. some things are extremely resilient- when external stressors are introduced those fuckers will not die out at all, and will usually dominate future populations even after the habitat has reached a relative state of equilibrium stress events. Some however of course have low as hell resilience and yeah theyre gonnabe the first to die out and REALLY REALLY struggle to come back.
anyways now that we know somewhat of how observed communities are going to react to shit like- fucking acidic poisonous water that has turned blood red - we can start to speculate what the HELLS in there . because i have no fucking faith in Kagami to actually show us whatever the hells in there.
SO MONSTERS YEAH? let's say that these "monsters" that are in the water are actually evolved marine life - since OnS apocalypse happens in 2012 and current timeline is in 2020 we can assume that no Crazy crazy evolution has occurred just yet (short-term evolution is something that Does happen- and incredibly fast in some species cases! because generation to generation survivability can be super fucking extreme and force shit like armor plating esp in some species of fish dependent on turbidity) BUT just little things. especially a likely shift toward red colorations in these bitches. i like to imagine that the monsters were just the super fucking resilient of the bunch and if theyre predatory to Anything that enters the water (HOW DO THEY KNOW ABOUT THE MOSNTERS ANYWAYS IF THE WATER IS ACIDIC AND POISONOUS? WERE THERE EXPEDITIONS?) assuming that boats and things have got the shit beat out of them and those people on voyages dying horribly - we can assume these are big fuckers yeah? or just fucking nuts with acid poison brain enough to harm themselves to fuck up vessels.
I LIKE TO BELIEVE HOWEVER, that oceans are fucking FULL of jellies (jellyfish- trying to be known as just jelly or jellies these days since they aren't actually fish!) . Grains of Time: Chapter One
Word count: 1.3k
In a far corner of the cosmos, a planet filled with uncountably many grains of sand—the hourglass of the universe—waits for no one. It floats in an ocean of black, a lone beige speck amidst the ink of the page of outer space. Violent zephyrs drag across the desert landscape, bringing an entire history of dust with them. The ravaging winds seem to tear the planet in twain, and the terrain shifts, never staying the same.
Abstract, crimson formations of oxidized metals meld into the sand. Their original purpose has long since faded into obscurity. For all anyone had known, they have been here since antiquity. These inorganic corpses are as much a piece of the planet as the infinite sands themselves.
In the far distance, almost beyond the horizon, a behemoth of steel dominates the landscape. Its savage triangles stand out in a sea of gold. A single beacon of stasis among the entropic fields of sand.
Any hope of a surface civilization had long been abandoned, along with the world itself. There was only one. Amidst the oxidized metal and rustwork was a lone sentinel, a poorly built and barely functioning droid designated PT73.
It was almost noon. The savage star scorches the shifting sands, transforming unconstrained silica into crystalized quartz. Rust bakes deeper into the discarded iron. Useless and crumpled copper wiring ages a fair shade of green. Any living creature, had there been any, would rust away, leaving only a brittle husk. Despite the hellish temperatures, the world moves on. PT73 does not notice, its circuits unrelenting and its concentration unbroken.
The droid resides in a hollowed dune with walls made primarily of the very same crystal that this planet ever so generously produces. A mix of hardened sand and reddened iron alloys compose the rest. The dunes protect it well, and the flaming world outside is of little concern here. A fortunate position, one well-suited to the needs of a tinkerer.
Deeper inside, a slate grey switchboard blinks scarlet, the only source of light in the sandstone bunker. It softly hums and whirs, a sublime sound in stark contrast to the extinguishing intensity of the desert winds. It was a wonder how anything could still function in this place. An interface gleams with green numbers—70GHz, 200GHz—frequencies. The terminal seems to whisper the secrets of the universe to anyone who dares listen.
PT73 holds up a splintered terracotta tablet; it is only a small piece of a larger, missing mural. It had become a passion project to investigate the remnants of the past. Civilizations were a thing of the past here. How distant, it could not be known. A single sandstorm is all it takes to erase any trace of that which is known. It seemed almost an insurmountable task to uncover these mysteries, but there wasn’t much else to do.
Surely the planet couldn’t have always been like this? It is so evidenced by the fragments of ruined construction, that there was at one time something here. Something. Now there is only nothing.
Replacing the tablet on its pedestal, PT73 has found its purpose.
The sieging winds outside languish. Burning embers fall silently to the sand, signaling a temporary retreat of the weather. A world-shattering quake blares in every frequency, threatening to rip the planet apart, and nearby, a thick wrought-iron case soars down from the sky, tumbling for a few persistent meters before coming to equilibrium. Its rusted door screeches open, falling from its hinges. An empty compartment.
~~~
Everything is just an empty compartment. Unfathomable distances separate anything of significance. Even the very grains of sand which comprise the planet are empty. Electrons have never once met a nucleus. The universe seems to depend fundamentally on the interactions of two strangers.
~~~
Lights flicker on a familiar mechanism on the other side of the universe. A current of static flows through a single channel and fluorescent orange nixie tubes display an array of numbers like a waterfall of information. Steel pans clamber to the ground in an adjacent room, and an electric voice can be heard muttering.
It speaks in much the same way that stones do not.
Thousands of books littered the walls and floor. Whatever this entity was, it was quite familiar with inquiry.
Inundated by a ceaseless static, it concerns itself with solutions. A radio tower in the distance, no doubt long dead, might hold a viable transmitter.
It pushed aside some metal scraps—working components for the nearby machinery—and set out towards the towering steelwork preserved by the absence of time.
Outside, the air is frozen solid. It chokes the terrain in thick sheets of suspended ice. A world forever unchanging, unvisited by time. It waits patiently for something, something that will never come.
Everything that once was is everything that will be. The constructions of an extinct civilization assault the pure white backdrop, unaltered from their time of prosperity. Thousands of polychromatic parallelograms serve as a constant reminder of the past. At such extreme distances, one could blissfully pretend as if life still thrived. The vibrance of it all was certainly convincing.
It was like gazing into the sky, looking thousands, if not millions of years into the past with every insignificant dot. A cosmic graveyard.
There is no star here. The planet drifts without orbit, a mysterious interloper disregarding other lifeforms. Explanations are the quandary of society, while objects of this size dabble in uncertainty.
And though uncertain of what might lie ahead, the entity set out, drifting between crowds of people frozen in time, not so unlike the planet it inhabits.
~~~
The container’s purpose unclear, PT73 pulled it along back to the only permanent location on the planet, and lazily pushed it into an unoccupied corner of the bunker. Its rust-coated door remained open, revealing only an infinite emptiness within.
The droid made to retreat outside—discovery awaits—but a strong gust from outside reminded it of the harsh reality that awaits. Ever still, PT73’s desire would not falter, and these ceaseless storms cannot extinguish its hope for this planet.
Preparing to wait out the storm, it turned to face its collections again, and that was when it noticed—there, beside the meaningless container, was an unfamiliar dark and metallic sphere.
PT73 is exceptionally aware of all of its artifacts, as it keeps a strict record of them all, yet this object was nowhere to be found in its lists. Undeterred, it approached the curious ball, holding fast in its stride until a sudden click reverberated off the slate walls. The droid paused. Another click, followed by a rotary sort of sound, coincident with a small slot appearing on the sphere. A lanky, black rod appeared from the slot and indeed on the opposite side too. The appendages intended to rotate towards the ground and extended, lifting the being a decent radius. It made one last noise, a floaty beep, and then seemingly turned to face PT73. The droid only backed away, having never seen another entity in all its centuries of roaming. A pair of amber lights lit up, almost like eyes seeing for their first moment after several lifetimes, and it let out another singular beep. Hesitant to approach, PT73 produced its own noise in response, a kind of question to the entity, in order to gauge its understanding, and ball seemed to nod, transmitting a string which could only be its own name.
In the next few rotations of the planet, PT73 learned much about the ball’s origin—it had fallen from an unmanned freighter which crashed into this planet, and on board was a wide assortment of nonnative metals and alloys which could aid in getting off this planet. Purpose tugged at every wire in PT73’s chassis, and thus it prepared to embark on a long, long journey. It placed the alien droid into a steelen backpack, and it thereafter poked a round head out the top, its orange eyes beaming with the prospect of adventure.
Top fav fics of all time
✨ Otherwise known as the fics that need way more love and attention ✨
Way down we go (T): Not only is this such a cute story, but the characterization is perfect and the subject matter (while heavy) is charming and fluffy. Features werewolf Harry Potter and a down and out Draco in Alabama of all places. I've read this 7000 times and I will continue to reread this until I am blind, and then I'll get my partner to read it to me until they go blind.
Lovesick(T): A really cute and fluffy one shot featuring healer Draco and perpetually love potioned Harry.
A Big Black Sky(M): TW: domestic violence, sexual violence, depression. Right up front there is a brief mention of mpreg in this fic, normally it is not my cup of tea (but I don't ick anyone's yum) so fair warning. It's very mild, but the story is SO good and Harry and Draco's relationship in this is very sweet. Scorpius is a sweet baby in this and the love Draco has for him is so special.
Make Yourself(E): TW: nonconsensual drug use, abuse, depression, agoraphobia. This is one of those fics that has changed me as a person. Harry uses Grimmauld place to house all his friends, they live comfortably in his home and Harry is happy. With a habit of collecting strays, Harry brings Draco along for the ride.
Hermione Granger's Hogwarts Crammer for Delinquents on the run(T): This fic was the right amount of silly and endearing and lovely for a lazy afternoon read. Harry is never found and never goes to Hogwarts so it's up to a couple delinquents to make sure Harry knows how to magic. Draco in this is so funny and Harry is so snarky and Hermione is just trying her best.
Thermodynamic Equilibrium(T): Harry is always too hot and Draco is always too cold. Together they find they are the perfect temperature. Cute two chapters of fluff, some angst and falling in love.
Two to Lie and one to Listen(E): Hermione breaks up with Ron, Harry is confused. Hermione starts dating Draco, Harry is very confused. Fake dating fic between a closeted gay Draco and a sweet and loving openly trans Hermione. The whole fic is amazing and the angst from Harry is top tier!
Dragons Don't Talk(T): TW: depictions of panic attacks, abuse, mutism, depression, and death. I literally only just read this, this month, and I loved it so much. Harry struggles to speak at the end of the war, Draco simply cannot stop talking, together they make the perfect duo.
✨ Remember to leave a comment and kudos on the authors work if you liked their fic! ✨
By holding their breath, scalloped hammerhead sharks may be able to regulate their body temperature when diving thousands of feet below surface waters. Photograph By Greg Lecoeur
Do Sharks Hold Their Breath Underwater? This Species Might.
The “completely unexpected” behavior reported in scalloped hammerhead sharks raises questions about how widespread it may be among other species.
— By Dina Fine Maron | May 11, 2023
Scalloped hammerhead sharks may be holding their breath when they dive deep into frigid waters. The revelation, published today in Science, suggests that this strategy may allow the warm-water dwellers to regulate their temperature while they hunt.
This technique is “completely unexpected,” says Mark Royer, a shark biologist at the University of Hawaii who led the research. “This kind of behavior has never been observed in any kind of deep-diving fish,” he says, and it now raises questions about how widespread breath-holding may be among other species.
These critically endangered hammerhead sharks typically rely on forward movement to force water across their gills, which enables them to extract needed oxygen to breathe. Yet when the predators swim half a mile down to catch squid and other prey, the colder water could impact their metabolism, cardiac function, and eyesight—all factors that would reduce their hunting prowess.
By closing their gills and mouths—holding their breath—the animals could limit their exposure to cold water.
Some species, like bluefin tuna and mako sharks, have specialized anatomy that allows them to conserve their body heat in cold waters, but scalloped hammerheads don’t have that advantage.
That’s why some scientists have theorized that scalloped hammerheads maintain their body heat using simple thermal inertia—essentially relying on their large body size to help maintain their temperature and carry heat down as they dive into cold depths.
“Imagine you are trying to defrost your 15-pound Thanksgiving turkey: you bring it out of your freezer, and it takes a long time to thaw—that’s like thermal inertia,” says Marianne Porter, a biologist who studies shark movement at Florida Atlantic University and wasn’t involved in the study.
Yet tiny sensors that the team placed on adult scalloped hammerhead sharks—basically a “Fitbit for sharks” as Royer says—suggest that thermal inertia isn’t the reason they remain warm during their hunting trips at depth.
Hunting in Frigid Waters
For the study, the team analyzed detailed information about the swimming behavior, depth, and location of a small group of six tagged male sharks that collectively completed more than a hundred dives around Hawaii over several weeks.
Tiny probes also recorded the animals’ muscle temperatures during these repeated nighttime dives. That data, alongside further modeling, indicated that the sharks managed to largely maintain their body temperatures both when they were at surface waters around 80 degrees and when they plunged to more than 2,500 feet below where temperatures dropped by roughly half, to around 41 degrees.
Surprisingly the animals’ body temperatures did eventually drop when they had ascended and reached slightly warmer waters about halfway back to the surface—apparently when the sharks had opened their gills to obtain needed oxygen. That’s not what you would expect with thermal inertia, since there’d be a more constant warming and cooling to reach equilibrium, Royer says.
Though they didn’t observe the sharks actually closing their gills, his team suspects that’s what’s happening. To fully confirm their breath-holding hypothesis, Royer says, they will next need to affix cameras to the pectoral fins of these hammerheads to observe the gills opening and closing as sharks dive.
It’s still unclear how the 12-foot-long species may have acquired this breath-holding skill. “It’s possible they learn it from social interactions from other hammerheads that are diving,” says Royer, adding “another possibility is they’re following the example of other animals that dive and eat prey at the same depth.”
A school of scalloped hammerhead sharks navigates deep water near Costa Rica’s Cocos Island. The sharks sometimes dive thousands of feet below the surface in search of squid, fish, and other prey. Photograph By Greg Lecoeur, National Geographic Image Collection
Compelling Evidence
Further backing the team’s breath-holding conclusion: prior footage from a remotely operated vehicle that shows an adult scalloped hammerhead shark swimming in Tanzania at more than 3,000 feet below the surface with its gills closed, and footage of the species in its typical surface waters with open gill slits. What’s more, another experiment from Royer’s team with deceased hammerheads in warm and cold water baths also supported their results.
“It’s a compelling paper—the way they have all these lines of evidence suggesting this might be happening,” says Porter. “I’m convinced” there’s breath-holding, she says.
Female scalloped hammerhead sharks also conduct deep dives, she says, so though this study only included males she suspects this applies to non-pregnant females as well.
The implications of this breath-holding work are “remarkable,” write the University of Western Australia’s Mark Meekan and Murdoch University’s Adrian Gleiss in an accompanying scientific commentary also published in Science.
If these rapidly declining species can pause respiration while foraging at depth they may cope with the increasingly common low-oxygen environments in our changing world better than expected, they write. Already, scalloped hammerheads occupy low-oxygen waters in the Gulf of California, and this newly discovered breath-holding skill may explain their presence, they note.
It's true that these animals may survive in low-oxygen areas for short periods, Porter says, but that’s likely not sustainable long-term. “I would wonder what happens if that becomes their reality all the time.”
Homeostasis: The Key to Optimal Health and Functioning
Homeostasis helps the body stay balanced for good health.
Systems adjust constantly to changes in the environment.
Disruptions in homeostasis can cause illness or dysfunction.
Hormones and the nervous system maintain internal stability.
Healthy habits like proper sleep and nutrition support homeostasis.
Introduction
Homeostasis refers to the body’s ability to maintain stable internal conditions despite outside changes. This balance is necessary for cells, tissues, and organs to work efficiently.
Whether it’s adjusting to external temperatures or regulating blood sugar, homeostasis allows the body to function optimally.
How Homeostasis Works
Internal Balance
The body continuously monitors its internal environment to stay within healthy ranges.
This involves various systems working together to control things like;
Temperature
pH levels
Hydration
Feedback Loops
Homeostasis operates through feedback loops. Negative feedback loops, the most common type, act to correct deviations from normal conditions.
For example, if blood sugar rises too high after eating, insulin is released to bring it back to a normal level.
Positive feedback loops, on the other hand, amplify changes, such as in childbirth, where hormone levels increase to intensify contractions.
Examples of Homeostasis in the Body
Temperature Regulation
The human body has mechanisms to keep temperature within a narrow range. When the body becomes too warm, it responds by sweating, which cools the skin as the sweat evaporates.
If the body becomes too cold, shivering generates heat through muscle movement, and blood vessels constrict to reduce heat loss.
Blood Sugar Control
Maintaining a stable blood sugar level is another important aspect of homeostasis. After eating, insulin helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream, lowering blood sugar levels.
When blood sugar is too low, glucagon triggers the liver to release stored glucose, keeping energy levels steady.
Fluid Balance
Water levels in the body are regulated by the kidneys, which adjust urine concentration to maintain proper hydration.
Electrolytes like sodium and potassium also help keep fluids balanced, ensuring cells can carry out their functions properly.
Factors That Disrupt Homeostasis
Stress
Chronic stress can overwhelm the body’s regulatory systems, leading to imbalances.
The release of stress hormones like cortisol disrupts normal processes, affecting everything from digestion to immune function.
Prolonged stress weakens the body’s ability to maintain internal stability.
Diet and Nutrition
Poor eating habits, whether through overeating, undereating, or consuming too many processed foods, can throw off homeostasis.
For example, high sugar intake can cause constant blood sugar spikes, putting stress on the body’s ability to regulate glucose. Nutritional imbalances can impair bodily functions over time.
Lack of Sleep
Sleep is essential for the body to recover and maintain balance. Without enough rest, hormone levels, immune function, and blood pressure regulation are all negatively impacted.
Consistent sleep deprivation makes it harder for the body to restore equilibrium.
Supporting Homeostasis for Optimal Health
Diet and Nutrition
Consuming nutrient-rich foods, such as grass-fed meats, pasture-raised eggs, and wild-caught seafood, helps support the body’s regulatory systems.
These foods provide high-quality proteins, healthy fats, minerals and vitamins that are vital for maintaining balance.
Avoiding processed foods and sugars can prevent disruptions in energy and metabolic stability.
Exercise
Regular physical activity helps keep systems like metabolism and circulation functioning well.
Exercise supports cardiovascular health, regulates blood sugar, and improves the body’s overall efficiency.
It also boosts the body’s ability to respond to stress and recover from physical strain.
Stress Management
Managing stress through techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or mindfulness reduces its negative impact on the body.
These practices help lower stress hormone levels, keeping the nervous system in check and promoting overall balance.
Adequate Sleep
Getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night is important for maintaining balance across various bodily functions. Sleep allows the body to restore energy, repair tissues, and regulate hormones.
Without proper rest, the body struggles to maintain homeostasis, leading to fatigue and decreased resilience to stress.
Conclusion
Homeostasis is at the core of maintaining good health and well-being. It ensures that the body’s internal environment remains stable, even when external conditions fluctuate. Supporting homeostasis involves simple, yet effective lifestyle choices, such as eating nutrient-dense foods, staying active, managing stress, and prioritizing sleep. These habits help the body stay balanced and perform at its best.
FAQs
